Setting Goals is Key To Happiness and I have not fully appreciated that.

My earlier posts

In my first post, I say:

‘I am on a mission to build an online business in affiliate marketing and want to share my journey on this blog.’

Sharing my second blog, I talk about being mindful of being self-confident and the importance of having a plan.

In my third post, I focus on having a purpose and getting clear on WHY I want to do what I’ve set out to do.

Retracing My Steps

I decided to retrace my steps in this Goal Setting process of building an online business as I think it is the most important step and I want to make sure it’s given the space it needs.

It sets the foundation for everything else so I think it’s worthwhile to spend time here.

In this retrace, I also realized that I had focused only on my business goals.

So along with my business goals, I want to have goals for all parts of my life.

I want to take time to consider life, every aspect of it ….

My relationship with myself, life, people, animals, and nature that all together make life so amazing.

GOAL SETTING Steps

Brian Tracy, a great motivational speaker, has many books but also videos online.

In a video, Success is a Journey

he says that:

‘In many ways, a trip or a journey is a metaphor for life. Throughout the way, you encounter hardships, obstacles, and naysayers. Ultimately, it’s up to you to overcome them to reach your ultimate goal.’

Ok, so how best to achieve goals?

In his book titled Goals, there are 3 clear steps.

  1. Write down your goals

  2. Make a plan of how you are going to achieve them

  3. Work on your plan every day

Step 1 – Write down your goals

Writing down your goals is important so that you have a tangible, clear, physical thing in front of you.

I have written goals in the past and then come upon them in later years and am shocked that what I wrote down has come to pass.

At the time I thought it had just organically happened, but then I saw that I had written it down before it happened!

But I had neglected steps 2 and 3.

Step 2 – Make a plan of how you are going to achieve them

In this blog, I had only partially covered steps 1 and 2.

STEP 3 – Work on your plan every day

This step had been left out of all my previous plans and without it – it’s a kind of hit-and-miss.

I know of a marketer who designed a card for us to write our ‘mission statement’ and view it often in the day every day.

This step is so critical that I plan to make sure I see my goals every day and that I am working on them daily.

My Goals

I am setting out my goals partially to give you ideas but also for myself.

You are my accountability partner and I, you.

Later on, you may say, but Eleanor what about this, what about that?

My Health Goals

Walk at least 10,000 steps a day (about 5 miles) consistently.

I already do this generally and have increased the consistency in the last few months.

I climbed my first mountain of 2900 ft in 2023 and am setting a goal to do this at least once a year.

I want to read a book at least once every two weeks.

Initially, I thought about one every week but I want to build up that consistency first

My Creativity Goal/s

In my previous post, I recognized how important creativity was for me, now writing a blog is creative but I also discovered I love colors and wanted to paint and had ignored it as I did not see myself as an ‘artist’

I am setting a goal to do a creative thing once a week, whether it’s painting or picking up the guitar and practicing.

I am including doing a video once a week at least as I have published my first two TikTok shorts

(though the first one seems to have been archived)

so am feeling the fear and discovering I love all this creativity!

Who Knew?

I intend to continue writing a blog at least once a week.

Everything starts with Thought

Tracy says that everything starts with a thought.

This I believe is an accepted principle and is one reason why setting goals is so important.

Goal Setting Can Make YOU Happy

GOALS, Tracy says lead to happiness as while you’re thinking of your goals, it’s exciting, and filling you with joy.

I have not yet completed my goals but I think it’s time to end this post.

Next time I will cover the rest of my goals and Step 2 – the planning…..

Enjoy the journey.

Be Fearless,

Eleanor

Do your goals include these 3 steps?

Do you feel happy when you are thinking about your goals?

  1. Goals: without them, you’re not growing! (at least, that’s what I’ve heard 🙂
Seriously though, the one big thing to make sure to consider is reviewing them on a very regular basis – that way you know you’re on always on the right path in making them happen.
Can’t wait to read your step 2!

  2. Eleanor, I think this is a perfect example of a topic that is so “simple,” yet it needs repeating time and time again because we tend to forget its importance. I myself am guilty of this: I tend to move forward with whatever I’m working on, and sometimes I get tripped up or confused in moments. I believe if I had a clearer, more prominently displayed goals, it may help me to stay on track and stay focused. I think you’ve just motivated me to be a little more disciplined, and vocal about my goals. THANK YOU for the excellent post!

  3. This was a good review of the importance of goal setting. I fail at doing this… well, I goal set daily, but it seems it’s a new goal daily lol Thinking about this as I read your post I realized how much more organized my week would be if I actually wrote my goals down and planned my week around them! I look forward to your post on how to lay the plan out!

  4. Eleanor, brilliant post again, thank you. Great advice regarding a plan so many people don’t do this. We think by having thoughts in our head, we just follow it in some kind of order but that never works because emotion gets in the way. By having things written down and prioritised, you can follow this plan in the systematic way. I’ve started seeing your TikTok videos they’re great keep going you’re going to be amazing. Thanks, Atif

  5. Hi Eleanor,
Goal setting should always be the first thing you do in business. You said it and laid it out nicely in your posts. I like the idea of writing them down and seeing them every day, so you don’t forget what you’re working towards. Sometimes I’ll write them down, but then they get shuffled in the papers and then lost. It is very impressive you are climbing a mountain as high as 2900 feet high…. 👏 I look forward to seeing your next post.

  6. Hi Eleanor,
I like how you are making goals in every aspect of your life, that is so cool. I need to do this too!

Brian Tracy is just amazing, I love his audio.
You are so true about the 3 steps shared by Mr Tracy.

  7. I love the way you outlined goal setting. I write my daily goals down but more must be done. I think looking at the week ahead and assigning certain tasks to each day helps cover the part of working on goals everyday.

The creativity goals are important to me. I need to start playing the violin, again. Blogging and video are fantastic creative endeavors, as well. Life itself is a creation! There are endless possibilities!

  8. I think it’s a good idea to reassess our goals every now and again, and retrace the process of how we got to where we are at, and make sure we actually have a plan and we’re following it.

And certainly important to keep track of our non-business goals, because these are probably the reason we even have the business goals.

  9. Oh, Eleanor! That is such an interesting question.
Do my goals make me happy? I don’t think they usually do. I’m just realizing this talking to you.
I’m learning to frame my online business journey as enjoyable rather than desperately trying to get a new job to work. That kinda just happened accidentally over the course of a year. I’m enjoying it more now. It began in desperation, then became a challenge I couldn’t quit, and now I like it.
But I think I have the same problem when it comes to my personal goals. For example, I want to learn Russian because I want to read Dostoevsky in his own words. I am so intimidated by my attempt because I have not succeeded over the years. I’m going to try an experiment this week and try to enjoy learning.
You’ve really given me something to think about. Light bulb moment! Thank you!

  10. I love this; I especially love how you set goals to enhance every avenue of your life, even creativity! Which mountain did you climb in 2023? I did the Anapurna Circuit in 2018 and have been wanting to do another big adventure like this. I live in San Francisco, and take a walk every day, trying to go up as many hills as possible, to keep my training up for the next one 😉
